Author Interview: Holly Bloom

Good morning, lovely readers!

Today we kick off our series of author interviews with Holly Bloom. Be sure to make her feel welcome! I’ll let her introduce herself:

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a UK-based author who writes gritty contemporary romance books that feature troubled characters, strong female leads, and often more than one love interest – why choose, right? I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember and went on to study English Literature and Social Policy, where I learned that Shakespeare and the classics aren’t for me! When I started writing more seriously, I started out writing plays and quickly moved on to romance because that’s what I’ve always loved to read. I’m a lover of the dark – romance, chocolate, and beer included! – so when I’m not writing, I’ll probably be consuming one or all three at once.

Tell us about your upcoming book.

Disharmony, the first book in the Ash and The Basilisks duet, comes out on August 30. It’s a multi-POV rock star why choose romance set in a summer camp hiding sinister secrets.

My initial idea for a book about a girl falling for a heavy metal rock band turned into something more complex as I was writing. The main character, Ash, is forced to pretend to be a popstar for a chance to live her dream, but everything starts to change when she meets her favorite band.

This story is about following your dreams, but it’s also about grief, loss, overcoming trauma and, more importantly, learning to heal together. Although it features the longest steamy steam I’ve ever written, I’d still class it as a slow burn with a real focus on the different characters and plot. And, of course, you can definitely expect twists and surprises along the way!

Who is your favorite character in your books? Why?

This is such a tough one, but I’d have to say Mieko from my Lapland Underground series. She’s a side character and the super sweet BFF of the main badass FMC, Candy. She’s the kind of best friend that everyone should have. I loved writing Mieko’s character arc as she goes through huge changes over the course of the series. She has a dark past but gains strength throughout the books, and it was amazing to watch her grow.

What is your writing process? Show us a day (or week) in the life.

I write around my day job, so I work on all things bookish in the evenings and over the weekends. The ultimate dream is to be able to quit and write full-time, so here’s hoping that can happen one day!

I tend to have a playlist for each book I’m writing which captures the vibe, and this really helps to keep me going on days where the words aren’t coming. I can listen to the same song on repeat for hours, so I probably drive my neighbours crazy… oops.

What keeps you motivated to write?

Writing is part of who I am, and I can’t see that changing. Even before publishing, it’s how I used to fill my spare time. The only difference and added motivation I have now are my amazing readers. They’re freaking amazing. Their support, reassurance, kind words, reviews… they make my heart all fuzzy and give me the extra push I need on those slower days.

What subgenres or tropes are your favorites to read?

I’m a mood reader so it can change, but I love dark books: taboo, forbidden, enemies to lovers, gangs, mafia… all that good stuff!

What’s your favorite book or comfort re-read?

I love the Academy of Misfits series by Bea Paige – I don’t think it gets half the credit it deserves.

Where can readers find you online?

My characters may bite, but I don’t – promise 😉
