Giveaway! A Happy Thought Indeed

About the shop: A Happy Thought Indeed

Tell us about your shop. What do you sell?

I create handmade jewelry using raw brass, acetate and discarded books.

What first inspired you to create these items?

It all started with a Mr. Darcy necklace! My mother in law was selling doll clothes at an upcoming craft fair and encouraged me to make something to sell and have the booth next to her. My first idea was to make Mr. Darcy necklaces from an old beat up copy of Pride and Prejudice. Because who doesn’t love Mr. Darcy? I always say he’s my favorite swoon worthy fictional character. Well, those necklaces sold so well that I kept creating and chose the name of my business (A Happy Thought Indeed) from my favorite Jane Austen novel, Pride and Prejudice. This quote is snarky Jane Austen at her best; I can just feel Elizabeth Bennett rolling her eyes as her cousin brags about the shelves in his closet!

What do love about your work? Do you have a favorite item you’ve created?

I’ve expanded the types of pieces I create since that first craft fair years ago, but I still enjoy creating book page pieces. I love saving an old tattered thrift store copy of a story that people adore. From Austen to Tolkien to Shakespeare and so much more. To be able to take a book off a thrift store shelf and turn it into a piece of jewelry that can be loved by someone who holds that book in a special place in their heart… It’s a really great feeling. I’m not ruining a book by cutting into the pages. I’m giving it new life to be appreciated in a new way.

Do you have a favorite Jane Austen book or character?

Captain Wentworth is my favorite Austen character simply because of the letter he writes at the end of Persuasion. In my opinion, it’s one of the most romantic passage of any book I’ve read. Sorry, Mr. Darcy, the Captain has a way with words!
