Autumn de Wilde’s Emma is a colorful, modern romantic comedy. For viewers who don’t usually like period dramas, it’s perfect. For fans of all things Regency and tradition… not so much.
With its attention to detail, social hierarchies, shots of beautiful estates, and loyalty to plot and characters, BBC’s 2009 Emma miniseries might be the best period drama adaptation I’ve seen.
Andrew Davies’ writing delivers a charming adaptation with faithful characters, though the pacing could use some work.
Douglas McGrath’s vision of Emma, while arguably faithful as an adaptation, didn’t mesh with mine.
Emma Thompson is a talented screenwriter, delivering a witty, creative adaptation with a lot of heart.
The BBC’s Sense and Sensibility miniseries is a simple and faithful adaptation of a wonderful book.
The Northanger Abbey movie will probably disappoint book fans, but is still a charming piece of entertainment.
